Director: Juan Antonio Bayona

Lenght: 100mn
Rating : mmmmh !

Very interesting Spanish horror movie, in the tradition of Guillermo Del Toro – so it is not surprising he is the godfather of this movie. Despite its categorization as a horror film, it would be more accurate to say this is a very macabre faerie tale. El Orfanato has more in common with a traditional drama than with Ring or the Descent, nevertheless it plays by the code of the genre and there are one or two scenes that will have you shiver, but the rest is more mysterious than scary.

This does not take away the interest of the film, since it is both fantastically well filmed (The photography is flawless) and offer a compelling plot, supported by first-class acting. The Spanish-language cinema has been pretty active lately, with many talentuous directors such as, among others, Alejandro Amenabar, Guillermo Del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez-Inaritu. We now have to add Mr. Bayona to the radar screen. We’ll be watching you…
