12h08 à l’Est de Bucarest

Disappointing ! However many critics described this movie like a new example of Rumanian film-making vitality after Dante Lazarescu’ death of Cristi Puiu and The way I spent the End of the World of Catalin Mitulescu (a successful film about a brother and a sister one year before the end of Rumanian socialist regime).
Director : Corneliu Porumboiu
With Mircea Andreeseu, Teo Corban, Ion Sapdaru
Rating :
This new Rumanian film is long and boring although it lasts only 1.29 h.
Sixteen years after the Revoltion, a director of a local TV decides to organize a debate about a question which doesn’t arouse passion : did Revolution occur in this provincial town? To resolve it, he invites two friends, supposed witnesses of the “dramatic” events, Piscoce and Manescu. Piscoce is an old pensioner who makes paper shapes during the emission. Manescu, professor of History, crippled with debts, notorious drunkard, claims to have demonstrated with some colleagues in the main place of the town before Ceaucescu fleed in an helicopter at 12h08. If its story reveals to be true, it will mean that Revolution happened not only in Bucarest but here too…
The TV local show seems us totally incredible (hilarious centring) and illustrates the loss of financial, technical means in the country… The producer of the local TV complains that all his employees leave when they have accomplished their apprenticeship here to go to Bucarest.
A real irony to depict the Rumanian daily life… without concentrating with sordid aspects of life. But the set of very static shots gives too burdensomeness and exudes boredom.
